Modern military operations rely on the coordinated and integrated acquisition, processing and provision of timely, accurate, relevant, coherent and assured information and intelligence to support the successful execution of missions. ISR encompasses multiple activities related to the planning and operation of systems that collect, process, and disseminate data in support of current and future military operations.

A critical component of ISR in the air domain, Ultra’s Video Data Link (VDL) is unparalleled in its provision of video data transmission in hostile environments around the world. Ultra’s dVDL is designed to operate in all current and future versions of Litening pod, a combat-proven multi-spectral airborne targeting and navigation pod incorporating all targeting features required by the modern strike fighter. dVDL can be provided as either a new build item or as an upgrade to existing Ultra Litening Pod datalinks. The system provides full US and NATO interoperability, maximising the user’s ability to accurately target enemy forces whilst also significantly reducing the risk of incidents of fratricide.

Currently flying on the UK RAF’s Typhoon aircraft in the Litening targeting pod, the effectiveness of Ultra’s VDL is indisputable with over 100,000 hours of operational service. Building on the VDL’s unrivalled success, Ultra has developed the next digital generation of the technology.

An Ultra innovation, the dVDL is the first of its kind to be AES256 encrypted and approved for use in Rafael Litening Pods. Designed for all current and future versions of the Litening pod, installation takes a matter of minutes and it is fully compatible with L3’s ROVER™. As the dVDL has been developed to remain aligned with evolving NATO standards, it is future-proof.

Ultra’s video data link (VDL) technology has the capability to significantly increase air-land integration to support the sharing of mission-critical intelligence and situational awareness. The dVDL transmits full-motion video and the associated encrypted meta-data to ground and surface forces, providing proven, efficient interoperability with leading remote video terminals and enabling the secure sharing of enhanced situational awareness data and imagery with mounted and dismounted ground component elements. Ultra’s VDL is also in service on a number of coalition platforms, providing shared situational awareness to ground troops on operations.
